All of the below apps are available to stream via the Apple TV as well as some other streaming devices. You can read more about the different types of streaming devices here.

Netflix expanded to Canada in 2010. They are one of the biggest streaming services in the world. Netflix allows subscribers to stream television series and films via the Netflix website on personal computers, or the Netflix software on a wide variety of supported platforms.

Netflix is commercial free and has a mix of movies and TV series that come from other studios but they also produce a lot of their own content.

Netflix allows the creation of individual profiles and allows some content to be downloaded for offline playback on some devices.

 

Hulu is an on demand subscription streaming service originally established as a joint venture between ABC, Fox, NBC & Turner Broadcasting. It is now fully controlled and majority owned by Disney.

It has a huge selection of TV and movies from a wide range of content providers. Hulu also has its own original content that it produces like The Handmaid’s Tale.

Hulu has two subscription levels. $7.99 per month for a ‘limited commercial’ version and $14.99 per month for a commercial free version.

You can create multiple profiles with Hulu which means you can share the service and you can download content to small screen devices (phones, tablets) for offline viewing.

As it is now owned by Disney you there are various add on subscription deals you can get. You can add Disney+ for $2.99 a month, ESPN+ for $9.99 a month.

CBC Gem is the free streaming app from CBC. To make use of the app fully you will be asked to create an account. Once you have an account you are able to watch all of the regional local CBC channels live for free. You also have access to thousands of hours of CBC content on demand free.

The $4.99 per month subscription will give you access to CBC’s 24 hour cable news channel live as well as make all the on demand content commercial free.

CTV Review.png

CTV is one of Canada’s largest privately owned television networks and is owned and operated by Bell Canada. The networks programming consists mainly of American series.

You can watch the most recent episodes of shows for free for 7 days after they have been broadcast but it will include commercials. After 7 days you need to login with a cable subscription.

You also need a cable login and password if you want to watch any of the channels live.

There are some older TV series that are free to watch and a good selection of older films as well but they also come with commercials.

Paramount+ US Review.png

Where Hulu is a partnership between 3 of the 4 major US networks, CBS decided to launch their own independent subscription service. Formally called CBS All Access, they renamed and relaunched it as Paramount+ on March 4th, 2021. You can see what the service looks like here on our YouTube channel Quick Look video.

Paramount+ has two subscription levels. $5.99 per month for the ‘limited commercial’ version and $9.99 per month for the commercial free version.

Max replaces the HBO Max streaming service. Max loses the HBO moniker in its name with Discovery now taking ownership of the service due to the merger of the two companies. Max includes all of the HBO content as well as bringing content from Discovery.

There are 3 tiers of pricing. Max ad lite which includes ads for $9,99 per month. The ad free tiers are $15.99 per month and $19.99 per month for Max Ultimate Ad Free, which removes ads, allows for 4K streaming, and ups the number of concurrent streaming devices from two to four.

Disney+ is the home of a wide range of content from Disney including Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar content. In Canada a new section called Star was launched in Feb 2021 which raised the price of Disney+ from $8.99 to $11.99.

Apple TV + (pronounced Apple TV Plus) is Apple’s own streaming service.

There tends to be some confusion by people on what is what when it comes to Apple. Many people confuse the actual Apple TV streaming device with the Apple TV app and the Apple TV + streaming service.

The Apple TV streaming device is specifically that, an external streaming device you hook up to any TV.

The Apple TV app is an app that users can download and use on a variety of devices like Apple TV, Roku and certain smart TV’s.

Apple TV + is a subscription streaming service from Apple that costs $8.99 (CA) a month and offers up a small but growing selection of Apple original shows including The Morning Show, See, Severance, Ted Lasso, Dickinson, For All Mankind, Snoopy in Space, Oprah’s Book Club, Little America and others.

You may be eligible for a free year of the service as Apple has been giving away subscriptions with the purchase of certain new Apple devices.

Apple also recently took the first step in adding some outside content to the service by acquiring the exclusive streaming rights to all 96 episodes of Fraggle Rock. They also are planning on producing a new reboot of the series. Apple has also said they will look to acquire more older series and movies for their service.

Apple TV Channels Review.png

Apple TV Channels are streaming services that you can buy and stream directly in the TV app of the Apple TV, although the TV app is also now available on other streaming devices. All billing is handled through Apple itself and the video is hosted by Apple. This means you watch it directly in the TV app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV.

Channels as of now include Nick+, Starz, Paramount+, Britbox, SuperChannel, AMC+, Acorn TV, Out TV, IFC Films, Cottage Life, Mubi, Love Nature, ErosNow, Topic, Urban Movie Channel and TasteMade. All priced differently and most offer an initial free trial of anywhere between 7 - 30 days.

Peacock is a fairly new streaming service from NBC. Peacock’s content includes live news, sports, new original series and a large back catalogue of TV shows and movies.

There is a free ad supported model and then two paid subscription tiers to choose from.

Showtimes subscription based streaming service is similar to HBO’s except the focus is on Showtimes catalogue of original series as well as a huge selection of movies, documentaries, comedy specials and sports content including boxing. Discovery+ Review.png

Discovery+ launched in January 2021 and is a new service from Discovery. It includes 55,000 episodes from shows on the Discovery Channel, Food Network, HGTV, Animal Planet, TLC, A&E, BBC, The History Channel, Lifetime and other Discovery Inc.-owned channels. There are two subscription levels, $4.99 monthly or $6.99 for an ad-free version. You can read our full review of this service here.

Sling TV is one of the many US based ‘live tv’ streaming services. They have several packages that are $35 per month that include 40+ channels live as well as on demand content.

Sling TV also has the option to add on a lot of speciality and international channels that includes Arabic, Bangali, Cantonese, French, German, Hindi, Mandarin, Portuguese, Punjabi, Spanish and others.

Philo is similar to Sling TV but the service has no local or sports channels. As of now there are 60+ channels available live through the service. The service includes channels such as

Philo includes A&E, AMC, Animal Planet, AXS TV, BBC America, BET, CMT, Comedy Central, Cooking Channel, Discovery, Discovery Family, Discovery Life, DIY, Food Network, FYI, GSN, Hallmark, HGTV, History, IFC, Investigation Discovery, Lifetime, MTV, Nickelodeon, OWN, Paramount Network, TLC, Travel Channel, TV Land, TV One, upTV, VH1, Viceland, and WE tv.

It’s one of the more affordable live TV services. Philo has an unlimited DVR capability. Search, save, and then see your shows in Saved. Besides live TV there is also on demand content available.

River TV is a Canadian live TV subscription based streaming service owned and operated by internet service provider VMedia. It currently features over 30 live and on demand channels.

River TV is similar to US services like Sling TV and Philo. It is unique for Canada as it doesn’t require the user to make use of a specific internet provider like similar services like TekSavvy TV and Bell Fibe TV.

Amazon Prime Canada Review.png

Amazon Prime Canada is not as big as the US version of the service but it does include most of Amazon’s original shows and movies.

There are also add on channels that range in cost. Add on channels include StackTV, Starz, hayu, BritBox, BBC Earth, PBS, Shudder and others.

Crave (formally known as CraveTV) is a subscription based service owned and operated by Bell. The service features a variety of content from HBO, Showtime, Straz, CBS and Comedy Central.

Crave recently changed their subscription tiers and now offer a mobile only version of the service for $9.99 per month and a full on tier for $19.99 per month. There are also annual subscriptions.

PBS streaming service is free to download and use. It has a variety of their current shows on demand. You pick which PBS station you want to associate your streaming service with and you can switch it at any time.

The CW’s streaming service is free to download and use. The channel is owned and operated by CBS, AT&T and UPN. Current episodes of their shows are available for a limited time and includes commercials.

City TV Review.png

CityTV’s app is free to download. It’s classified as a TV Everywhere app. You can watch the most recent episodes of shows for free for 7 days after they have been broadcast but it will include commercials. After 7 days you need to login with a cable subscription.

The CityTV app does allow you to watch the channel live without the need for a cable login and password which is notably different than other TV Everywhere apps like the CTV & Global TV app.

Global TV’s app is another TV Everywhere streaming app. The app is free to download and use, but most of the content is locked behind the need for a cable login and password. This includes watching the channels live. The app was recently updated to include other Corus channels like History, Food Network Canada, HGTV Canada and others.

You can watch some episodes free within 7 days of broadcast.

TSN’s direct to consumer subscription service is $19.99 per month. For that you can watch all 5 TSN channels (TSN 1 - 5) live and since the app was updated in Feb 2021 you can now watch a whole host of on demand content. You can read a full review of the new TSN here.

You can also buy a 24 hour day pass to the service for $7.99.

You can also use the app as a TV Everywhere app and access the app by logging in with a valid cable subscription from a supported cable provider .

Sportsnet’s subscription based streaming service was recently lowered from $19.99 per month to $14.99 per month for SN Now Standard. There is also a $34.99 per month plan for SN Now Premium. Both versions give you access to the live Sportsnet channels. There is also some on demand content.

Users can watch clips and highlights for free without a subscription. There is also an annual subscription for $149.99 per year for SN Now Standard and $249.99 for SN Now Premium.

The Société de télédiffusion du Québec branded as Télé-Québec. Télé-Québec is equivalent to Ontario's TVOntario and TFO, and British Columbia's Knowledge Network, and similar to the American Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). All programming on Télé-Québec is in French, although there are a few shows and movies that are presented in the original language (predominantly English), with French subtitles.

The ESPN app is really two apps in one. ESPN+ is technically separate from ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNews, so a subscription to ESPN+ will not grant you access to live games on those networks. For ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNews you must login with a valid US cable provider.

ESPN+ includes a mix of live games from College Baseball & Softball (from more than 15 conferences including the Big 12, American, Sun Belt and C-USA), MLB, more than 5,000 NCAA Men's & Women's basketball games, UFC, more than 35 exclusive boxing events, Cricket, 35 golf tournaments in 2022 totalling more than 4,300 hours of coverage, NHL, KHL, PHL, College and IIHF World Championships. and It also features original shows like "30 for 30," as well as full replays of historic NFL games on-demand.

Pluto TV is an American internet television service owned by ViacomCBS. Pluto is a free, advertiser-supported video on demand service that primarily offers a selection of programming content through digital linear channels designed to emulate the experience of traditional broadcast programming.

Pluto TV licenses its content directly from providers, and as of March 2020 has deals with 170 content partners providing more than 250 channels and 100,000 unique hours worth of programming.

Crackle is another free ad supported streaming platform that is a joint venture between Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television.

The service is available in 21 countries on connected devices including mobile, tablets, smart TVs, desktop, and gaming consoles. There use to be a Canadian version of the service but it was shut down in 2018.

Crackle features many films and TV shows, some of them on an exclusive basis, mainly from Sony Pictures and its subsidiaries, including Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems, Sony Pictures Classics, Funimation, and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions.

DC Universe Review.png

DC Universe will shut down its movie and TV show streaming options on January 2021. It will change to DC Universe Infinite, and will only have online comic books from the DC Comics library of titles. The movies and TV shows will move over to HBO Max.

DC Universe provides old and new seasons of DC Comics-based live-action and animated TV content. Not available are recent shows based in The CW’s Arrowverse. These include Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Black Lightning, and Batwoman.

TVNZ or Television New Zealand is a state opertaed free streaming service similar to CBC in Canada but based out of New Zealand. Along with local content their library is made up of a lot of US and UK content as well.

The CTV News app is free to download. Normally the app requires a valid cable login and password to use but over the last few months due to the current global pandemic the app is free to use.

It’s a fairly basic app. There are a few live streams of the channel, no on demand content, no clips.
