Streaming the Oscars in Canada

We get a ton of emails from people every year asking us how you can stream the Oscars.
In Canada The Oscars is currently broadcast on CTV (Bell).
Bell has a CTV app for devices like Apple TV, Amazon Firestsick and the Chromecast. You can find a full list of supported devices here.
Unfortunately if you want to stream the show live on any of these devices using CTV you also need to have a valid cable login and password to enable the live stream. CTV does not currently support every cable company though. CTV’s parent company Bell has no way for you to subscribe to a live CTV stream even though they also own TSN and Crave which you can subscribe to without a cable subscription.
CTV is a channel that some people may be able to pick up via an antenna locally although it depends on where you are.
In the US, The Oscars is broadcast by ABC who also has their own streaming app. Just like the CTV app though in order to watch the channel live you need to have a US cable login.
You can get ABC as part of a broader live TV streaming service like Hulu Live or YouTube TV but those services are very pricey to subscribe to for one live event.
Beyond Canada and the US, The Oscars is also being broadcast on the Australian network 7+ (7 Plus) who also have an app on a variety of devices. We were able to open the app and play the live stream of the show for free, no cable login required.
Stream The Oscars - On Demand
If you wait until the following day you can watch The Oscars on demand. In Canada the CTV (Bell) app has the full show available for free. When watching it on demand the next day you don’t need to login with a cable provider on the CTV app.
In the US, the ABC app also makes the show available on demand but you still need to have a cable provider login to watch it.
If you are a Hulu Live or Hulu On Demand subscriber you can also watch The Oscars on demand the next day.
The 7+ (7 Plus) Australian app also has the show on demand for free. No cable login required.
Final Thoughts
It’s odd than in this day and age especially when the broadcast ratings for a live event like The Oscars have continued to decline over the years that the broadcasters still make it extremely difficult for people to stream the show in Canada.

If the networks are already selling ad space for the show you would think that they would want to make it as simple as possible for as many people to tune in and watch the show on any device. Maybe they will learn, but for now these are the options.
